Four Freedoms Library

Project details

Steadfast at Roosevelt Island is a complex that aims to take inspiration from Franklin D. Roosevelt’s famous “Four Freedoms” speech by implementing its idiosyncrasies into the design elements of each individual library.

Starting the journey below grade with the Freedom from Fear Library, its minimal apertures harbor a more introspective experience of reflection and encourage the occupant to circulate up and escape the heaviness. Flowing into the Freedom from Want Library, opening into a dynamic space with curtain walls on both Queens and Manhattan sides, with an exterior courtyard looking over the previous library’s courtyard; the sudden tonal shift aims to create a sense of excitement within its occupant. Leading into the Freedom of Religion Library’s second floor, the glass floor overlooking the enclosed ground-level courtyard and windows only on the Queens side encourages a sense of calmness and connection with those sharing the space. Ending in the Freedom of Speech Library, the only one with a corner wrapping window condition that creates an explosive view towards Manhattan and intentionally leads the eye to the UN building; its large apertures and wrapping podium seating foster a feeling of purpose within its occupants.
